Mark Menjivar raids your fridge

Rudy Murillo | Jun 15, 2009

I always thought one of the best parts of MTV's "Cribs" was when we got to see what was in people's fridges. San Antonio photographer Mark Menjivar's series You are what you eat takes the same quasi-voyueristic idea and applies it photos. For three years, Menjivar travelled the country taking portraits of the contents of people's fridges. Every fridge was photographed as is, nothing added, nothing taken away. The series forces you to make assumptions about the fridges' owners. Menjivar also includes small captions that include the owner's occupation, number of people in the household and one trivial fact. It's interesting to see if your assumptions are correct. Besides being an interesting social experiment, the photos themselves are beautiful and vivid. My favorite is the documentary filmmakers' fridge (beer in the vegetable drawer).
